For some teens, striving for perfection has led to harming their own health and wellbeing such as living with depression and suicide. Teenagers today are relying on what they see in ads, T.V., magazines and on the internet for their input on appearances, the way they think not only comes from media sources, but from family and friends. Just how does family and friends play a role in depression and suicide? Families and friends play a great role in our existences. If parents show signs of depression, and suicide the predisposition is that, their child may develop one is greater. Parents who suffer from underlying conditions that is not treated or rarely treated also plays a role in how a teenager will treat and care for their own†¦show more content†¦The DSM states â€Å"having five or more symptoms present during the same two week period and represent a change from precious functioning at least one of the symptoms is either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure† (American Psychiatric Association:, 2013). Some other â€Å"behavioral patterns are running away from home, accident-proneness; aggressive acting out; temper tantrums; self-criticism; social withdrawal and loneliness; extreme sensitivity to criticism by others; low tolerance of frustration’ sleep problems; dark fantasies, da ydreams or hallucinations; marked personality change; and overwhelming interest in death and suicide.† (Comer, 2014) This is why depression and suicidal behavior is harder to recognize and are not treated. â€Å"Depression can be difficult to diagnose in teens because adults may expect teens to act moody. In addition, adolescents do not always understand or express their feelings very well. They may not be aware of the symptoms of depression and may not seek help† (DEPRESSION IN TEENS).
